The Wayne State women's hockey team opened the 2001-02 season with a pair of victories over the University of Vermont on Oct. 13-14 at City Ice Arena in Detroit. The Warriors defeated the Catamounts 1-0 and 5-1 in the weekend series.

In game one on Saturday night, the Warriors defeated the Catamounts 1-0. Warrior freshman Heidi Burns (Union Town, Ohio/Green) recorded the only goal of the game for Wayne State, scoring at the 12:36 mark of the second period. Sophomore Brooke Needer (Rouleau, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame Prep) and freshman Krissy Langley (Shattuck, Minn.) each posted an assist on the goal.

Wayne State dominated Vermont, outshooting the Catamounts 48-14 for the game. Wayne sophomore Anna VanderMarliere (St. Clair Shores/Lakeshore) recorded all 14 saves in goal for her first shutout of the year.

In game two on Sunday, the Warriors took a commanding 4-1 lead after two periods and never looked back, defeating Vermont 5-1. The scoring was started by sophomore Katie Jones (Burnaby, British Columbia/B.C. Central), who lit the lamp at the 10:57 mark in the first period. Jones was followed by freshman Cheralyn Anderson (St. Paul, Minn./North), who scored just one minute later to put Wayne up 2-0. Vermont got on the board with Stephanie Cole scoring with 58 seconds left in the first.

Jones started the second period off by scoring her second goal of the season just 28 seconds into the second stanza. Sophomore Kelly Meech (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Port Moody) and freshman Kelly Zamora (Toronto, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) put the game away with Meech scoring midway through the second and Zamora scoring just a minute into the third. The Warriors compiled nine total assists on the five goals scored.

In game two, Wayne State once again dominated the shot category 67-9.

The Warriors will continue the season by traveling to Bemidji State for two games on Oct. 19-20.
