WSU Completes Sweep of Findlay
The first 39-plus minutes were scoreless with the Oilers outshooting the hosts 24-12, but WSU took a 1-0 lead when Heidi Burns (Uniontown, OH) slid the puck past Findlay netminder Erin Blair with nine seconds remaining in the middle period. Kelly Zamora (Oshawa, ONT) garnered the lone assist on the four-on-four goal. The Oilers tied the game at one just 27 seconds into the third period when Tracy Lowells shot eluded Warrior goaltender Tinna-Anne Thibideau (Barrie, ONT). Sophomore Laurie Petchar (Saline, MI) provided the heroics in WSUs final home game of the season as she scored her first game-winning goal of the campaign with 7:29 left in the third period during a Warrior power play. Petchars sixth of the season was assisted by Zamora and Kim Spaulding (Farmington Hills, MI). Thibideau made 39 saves in the Wayne State net including double-digit totals in each period. Blair had 19 saves for Findlay. The Warriors scored a power-play goal for the fourth consecutive game. Wayne State finishes the regular-season with a 6-22-2 mark while Findlay is now 7-21-2. The two teams will meet for a third consecutive game on Saturday, Feb. 23 in the GLWHA semifinal contest at Mercyhurst College (Erie, Pa.). Face-off is slated for 2 p.m. The winner of Saturdays match will face MC in Sundays championship game which also has a 2 p.m. start time.
The Warriors started fast as Melissa Wenzel scored just 2:57 into the contest off an assist from Kelly Meech. The Oilers tied the game at the 11:14 mark as Stasia Bakhit scored off assists from Cori Forbes and Julie Robert. Findlays Sherrie White scored the lone goal of the second period at the 5:03 mark. WSU would rally with three goals in the third period. The Warriors tied the game at the 3:00 mark as Brooke Needer scored off an assist from Cheryl Anderson. Krissy Langley tallied the game-winner at 9:32 off assists from Heidi Burns and Needer. Kelly Zamora sealed the win when she scored with 40 seconds left in the contest off an assist from Wenzel. Tinna-Anne Thibideau made 29 saves in the Wayne State cage, while Erin Blair had 27 saves for Findlay. The Warriors conclude the regular season at home on Sunday, Feb. 17 in a 2 p.m. face-off against the Oilers. |
