The Wayne State University women's hockey team rallied for a 4-3 overtime victory at the University of Connecticut Saturday afternoon (Feb. 9).

Sophomore Katie Jones (Squamish, BC) scored the lone goal of the first period (12:42) off an assist from freshman Kelly Zamora (Oshawa, ONT).

The Huskies tied the game at the 3:23 mark of the middle stanza on Megan McLeod's third goal of the weekend.

The Warriors regained the lead when Kelly Meech (Coquitlam, BC) lit the lamp for the fifth time this season at 7:23 off assists from Krissy Langley (Minnetonka, MN) and Zamora.

UConn would score a power-play goal 69 seconds after Meech's goal to pull even at two. Laura Stosky gave the Huskies their first lead of the game when she scored with 2:17 left in the second period.

Wayne State would rally to tie the game in the third period when sophomore Laurie Petchar (Saline, MI) would score her fifth of the campaign unassisted at 8:36.

WSU would be short-handed the final 1:25 of regulation and the first 35 seconds of overtime but would not allow a power-play goal to set up the overtime heroics.

Sophomore Melissa Wenzel (Canton, MI) scored the game-winner at 2:12 of the extra session off assists from freshman Heidi Burns (Uniontown, OH) and sophomore Joanie Denby (Sterling Hts., MI).

It was Wenzel's second goal of the weekend and third goal in six games since being moved up front from the blueline.

Freshman netminder Tinna-Anne Thibideau (Barrie, ONT) made a career-high 44 saves including 20 in the third period when WSU was outshot 20-7. Shannon Murphy had 24 stops in the Connecticut cage.

The Warriors are now 4-22-2 overall, while Connecticut falls to 11-15-2. WSU will play a home-and-home series against Great Lakes Women's Hockey Association foe Findlay this Saturday and Sunday. Face-off Saturday (Feb. 16) at Findlay is 2 p.m., with Wayne State's final home game starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 17) at City Sports Center Arena.
