WSU Lose At Top-ranked St. Lawrence

The Wayne State University women's hockey squad was blanked 7-0 on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 13) at fourth-ranked St. Lawrence University (12-6-2) in Canton, New York.

The Saints led 1-0 after 20 minutes on a power-play goal by Shannon Smith at the 6:30 mark. SLU outshot the Warriors 15-5 in the first period.

St. Lawrence tallied three goals in the first 5:14 of the middle stanza for a 4-0 advantage. Gina Kingsbury scored only 50 seconds into the period, while Vicky Hauck scored at 2:24 and Smith netted her second of the contest at 5:14. Kingsbury added a short-handed goal at 15:18 giving a SLU a 5-0 lead after two periods, and the Saints scored twice in the third period.

Wayne State goalie Anna VanderMarliere (St. Clair Shores, MI) finished the game with 42 saves as the Saints held a 49-21 advantage in shots on goal.

St. Lawrence extended the penalty kill streak to 23 consecutive kills, holding the Warriors scoreless on five opportunities. The Saints converted on one of their three power-play chances.

The Warriors will take a 3-15-2 record into next weekend's home series against Bemidji State. Face-off Friday, Jan. 18 at the City Sports Center Arena in Detroit is at 7 p.m.


Warriors Shutout At
Fourth-ranked St. Lawrence

The Wayne State University women's hockey squad was held off the scoresheet for the third time in the last four games falling to fourth-ranked St. Lawrence, 5-0, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 12) in Canton, New York.

The Saints scored just 84 seconds into the game on a power-play goal by Trisha Powers. SLU's Amanda Sargeant would record two more goals in the opening period (15:26 and 19:05).

After a scoreless middle stanza, the Saints would tack on two more goals in the final period: Christin Powers (3:26) and Whitney Carbone (4:12).

Freshman Tinna-Anne Thibideau (Barrie, ONT) made 41 saves in the Wayne State net including 19 in the third period. Rachel Barrie had 19 saves for the Saints including 10 in the second period.

WSU was held scoreless in four power-play attempts, while St. Lawrence scored on one of its three opportunities.

The Warriors are now 3-14-2 overall, while SLU improves to 11-6-2. The teams complete the weekend set with a 2 p.m. face-off Sunday, Jan. 13 at SLU's Appleton Arena.
