Warriors Swept At The Wayne State University women's hockey squad lost a 4-0 decision Saturday afternoon (Feb. 2) at ninth-ranked Mercyhurst. The Lakers scored once in the first period and added three tallies in the third period. Freshman Kelly Zamora (Oshawa, ONT) earned No. 1 star honors for the contest by stopping 44 MC shots. The Lakers limited the Warriors to eight shots on goal. Wayne State is now 3-21-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the Great Lakes Women's Hockey Association. The Warriors continue their road trip with a pair of contests next weekend at the University of Connecticut. The Wayne State University women's hockey team lost its 11th consecutive game Friday night (Feb. 1) falling 7-0 at ninth-ranked Mercyhurst. The Lakers scored twice in both the first and third periods, and added three goals in the middle stanza. Freshman Kelly Zamora (Oshawa, ONT) made 40 saves including 17 in the opening in her first collegiate game between the pipes. Desirae Clark had eight saves for Mercyhurst as the host Lakers outshot Wayne State 47-8 in the contest. Sara McDonald led MC with two goals and two assists, while C.J. Ireland and Mariann MacDougall each added a goal and an assist. Blueliner Joanie Denby (Sterling Heights, MI) led the Warriors with three shots on goal, while Katie Jones (Prince George, BC) and Melissa Wenzel (Canton, MI) each had two shots on goal. Brooke Needer (Rouleau, SK) had the other shot on goal. Wayne State is now 3-20-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the GLWHA, while Mercyhurst improves to 19-7-1 overall and 5-0-0 in the GLWHA. The teams conclude the weekend set with a 2 p.m. face-off Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. |
