Warriors Fall To Findlay, 4-1

The Wayne State University women's hockey team had its 2001-02 campaign come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Findlay in the Great Lakes Women's Hockey Association semifinal game on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 23) at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The Warriors trailed only 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes despite being outshot 15-6. The Oilers held a 10-5 second period shot advantage but would score just once for a 2-0 lead after two periods.

Findlay increased its lead to 3-0 when Stasia Bakhit scored 6:46 into the third period.

WSU freshman Kelly Zamora (Oshawa, ONT) scored the second short-handed goal of the season for the Warriors at 9:30 of the third period off an assist from Kim Spaulding (Farmington Hills, MI). Zamora's goal was her team-leading 11th lamp-lighter of the season. Spaulding finished fourth on the squad with eight assists.

Findlay added an empty-net goal in the final 90 seconds.

WSU goaltender Tinna-Anne Thibideau (Barrie, ONT) made 40 saves including 17 in the third period. Erin Blair had 16 saves for Findlay.

Wayne State concludes the season with a 6-23-2 mark. Coach Tom O'Malley's squad will return one senior, 11 juniors and seven sophomores for the 2002-03 campaign.
