Wayne State Takes Two Bemidji, Minn. The Wayne State women's hockey team lost its first games of the season to Bemidji State, 4-1 on Friday night (Oct. 19) and 5-1 on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20). Wayne State's record now stands at 2-2 overall on the year. On Friday, the Warriors led 1-0 after the first intermission, but were outscored 4-0 in the final two periods of play at John Glas Fieldhouse. Sophomore Katie Jones (Burnaby, British Columbia/B.C. Central) scored Wayne's only goal of the game, her third of the season, with 1:07 left in the first period. Freshman Kelly Zamora (Toronto, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) picked up the assist on the goal. Freshman Tinna-Anne Thibideau (Barrie, Ontario) posted 28 saves in the loss. In game two on Saturday, the Warriors fell behind 3-0 after the second period en route to a 5-1 defeat. Zamora opened up the Wayne scoring attack at the beginning of the third period (17:37 left in the game) by putting a goal past Bemidji goalie Anik Cote to cut the deficit to 3-1. Sophomores Kim Spaulding (Farmington Hills/Harrison) and Laurie Petchar (Saline) both picked up assists on the goal. Sophomore Anna VanderMarliere (St. Clair Shores/Lakeshore) took the loss, posting 33 saves. The Warriors continue their season at Minnesota State-Mankato on Oct. 26-27. |
