Warriors Drop Series To Bemidji State

The Wayne State University women's hockey team led 2-1 after two periods but surrendered four goals in the third period to fall to visiting Bemidji State, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) at City Sports Center Arena in Detroit.

Freshman Kelly Zamora (Oshawa, ONT) scored her team-leading eighth goal just 33 seconds into the contest ending the Warrior goalless streak at 244:19. Rookie Cheryl Anderson (N. St. Paul, MN) earned her team-best ninth assist on the WSU lamp-lighter.

Captain Kelly Meech (Coquitlam, BC) scored 9:21 into the middle stanza increasing the Warrior lead to 2-0. Meech's fourth of the season was assisted by freshman Amie Hickerty (Calgary, ALB), her first collegiate helper.

The Beavers' Caesare Stimson scored before the end of the period cutting the WSU lead to 2-1.

BSU tied the game with a power-play goal by Katie Ward just 1:49 into the third period.

The Warriors regained the lead when Katie Jones (Coquitlam, BC) scored at the 4:01 mark off an assist from Hickerty.

Bemidji's Amber Fryklund scored a power-play goal at 7:47 to knot the game at three and Kerri McEwen scored the go-ahead goal at 16:20. Guylaine Hache added an empty-net goal with 1:02 remaining to complete the scoring.

Bemdiji went two-for-four on the power play, while Wayne State was scoreless in four power-play opportunities.

Freshman Tinna-Anne Thibideau (Barrie, ONT) made 29 saves in the Wayne State cage, while Katie Anderson made 17 saves for Bemidji State.

The Warriors begin a seven-game road trip with a weekend set at Northeastern next Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26-27. Wayne State's final home game will be Feb. 17 versus GLWHA's foe Findlay at 2 p.m.


Warriors Defeated By Bemidji State, 5-0

The Wayne State University women's hockey team suffered a 5-0 loss to visiting Bemidji State Friday night (Jan. 18) at City Sports Center in Detroit

The Beavers scored just 52 seconds into the contest when defenseman Lisa Peters scored her seventh of the season off assists from Amber Fryklund and Lill Raynard.

BSU increased its lead to 2-0 at 10:05 when Caesare Stimson netted her seventh of the year from Jenny Schnikel and Raynard.

Stimson scored her second of the contest at 9:13 of the middle period for the only goal in the stanza. Fryklund garnered her second helper of the game on BSU's third goal.

Fryklund (0:28) and Katie Ward (15:18) scored in the third period for Bemidji.

Bre Dedrickson stopped all 18 Wayne State shots, while Anna VanderMarliere (St. Clair Shores, MI) had 23 saves before being helped to the lockerroom 4:53 into the third period. Tinna-Anne Thibideau (Barrie, ONT) made 12 saves in the final 15:07.

The Warriors are now 3-16-2 overall and will try and snap a nine-game winless streak when they face Bemidji State, 9-8-5, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19. Both teams went zero-for-two on the power play.
