Warriors Open 2001-2002
Season Versus Vermont

Wayne State opens its 2001-2002 season this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 13 and Sunday, Oct. 14, hosting the University of Vermont Catamounts at City Ice Area in Detroit.

The Warriors warmed up for its regular season with two exhibition contests at home last weekend. Wayne scored a total of 29 goals in the two contests while shutting out both opponents. It defeated the University of Michigan 13-0 on Saturday, Oct. 6, and Michigan State University 16-0 on Sunday, Oct. 7.

In the Michigan contest, coffee should have been served to goaltender Anna VanderMarliere. She faced only two shots all evening, and none in the third period. Wayne State had 61 shots on goal, including 28 in the first period.

Brooke Needer recorded a hat trick, and she finished with four points. Laurie Petcher scored twice and added one assist. Also scoring were Lindsey Akers, Cheralyn Anderson, Joanie Denby, Katie Jones, Kristina Sanfilippo, Kim Spaulding, and Kelly Zamora.

Against Michigan State the Warriors had only 54 shots on goal, but they scored a total of 16 times. And this time the Warriors gave up three shots on goal, but again blanked their opponent in the third period. Tinna-Anne Thibideau was between the pipes for the Spartan contest.

Anderson recorded a hat trick against Michigan State, and Heidi Burns, Annie Devaney, Spaulding and Zamora eached scored two goals. Single goals were scored by Akers, Denby, Amie Hickerty, Katie Jones, and Petchar.
