Warriors Complete Third Season
Wayne State had its 2001-02 campaign come to a close with a 4-1 setback on Saturday, Feb. 23, versus Findlay in the Great Lakes Women’s Hockey Association tournament semifinal contest. This was the second consecutive year the Oilers ended WSU’s season with a 4-1 win in the GLWHA semifinal game.

The Warriors finish the season with an overall mark of 6-23-2, one more victory than the previous season. This year’s roster consisted of one junior, 11 sophomores and seven freshmen.

Wayne State University Head Coach Tom O’Malley

He was the head coach at Boston College for 15 years, including the last five after the program was elevated to varsity status. O’Malley led the Eagles to back-to-back AWHCA national titles in 1992 and 1993.

2001-02 Schedule
The Warriors schedule featured four games (two at home, two away) against each of the other two members of Great Lakes Women’s Hockey Association plus 22 non-conference contests.

Assistant Coaches
This year’s assistant coaches were Alain Frankiewicz and Catherine Hanson with Mike Risdale serving as a volunteer coach.

Last Weekend
Wayne State had its 2001-02 campaign come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Findlay in the GLWHA semifinal game on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 23) at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The Warriors only trailed 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes despite being outshot 15-6. The Oilers held a 10-5 second period shot advantage but would score just once for a 2-0 lead after two periods.

Findlay increased its lead to 3-0 when Stasia Bakhit scored 6:46 into the third period.

WSU freshman Kelly Zamora (Oshawa, ONT) scored the second short-handed goal of the season for the Warriors at 9:30 of the third period off an assist from Kim Spaulding (Farmington Hills, MI). Zamora's goal was her team-leading 11th lamp-lighter of the season. Spaulding finished fourth on the squad with eight assists.

Findlay added an empty-net goal in the final 90 seconds.

WSU goaltender Tinna-Anne Thibideau (Barrie, ONT) made 40 saves including 17 in the third period. Erin Blair had 16 saves for Findlay.
