March 23, 2002 Warrior Hockey Teams The Wayne State University mens and womens hockey teams held their annual banquets Saturday at Hockeytown Café.
Junior Jason Durbin (Trenton, MI/Danville Wings) was named the mens team Top Gun (leading scorer), with classmate Tyler Kindle (Portage, MI/Bozeman Icedogs) being voted Best Defenseman. Junior Jon Brink (Portage, MI/West Michigan Warriors) was selected Most Improved, while Nathan Rosychuk (Athabasca, ALB/Grande Prairie Storm) was named Rookie of the Year. Junior Dustin Kingston (Spencerville, ONT/Brockville Braves) earned the Presidents Award for academic success, while Nick Shrader (Blissfield, MI/Compuware Ambassadors) was given the Coaches Award. Zamora also was named the womens team Top Gun (leading scorer) and Rookie of the Year. Sophomore Joanie Denby (Sterling Heights, MI) was voted Best Defensive Player, while newcomer Silva Nazoyan (Bloomfield Hills, MI) was selected Most Improved. Sophomores Kim Spaulding (Farmington Hills, MI) and Katie Jones (Squamish, BC) shared the Presidents Award for academic success. Kelly Meech (Coquitlam, BC) was given the Coaches Award. The Wayne States mens hockey team won the 2001-02 CHA regular-season championship as well as the 2002 CHA Tournament. The Warriors will begin the 2002-03 campaign with the nations longest active unbeaten streak (12 games). The Warrior womens hockey team won three of its final four games without a senior on the roster. |
