Tradition is something that takes years of hard work and accomplishment to achieve and must include a foundation based on winning.

In just her second season as head coach, Gloria Bradley has taken huge steps into building a winning foundation for the Wayne State women’s basketball program. Last year, WSU posted a 15-12 record in her first season, which included a berth in the GLIAC Tournament, following a 9-8 league mark during the regular season.

Besides posting a winning record in 2000-01, Bradley also produced the GLIAC Freshman of the Year (Tiffany Grubaugh), two All-GLIAC performers (Grubaugh,
Shana Lynch
) and one GLIAC All-Defensive Team member (LaTisha Martin) in her first season at WSU.

Prior to Wayne State, Bradley spent seven seasons as head coach at Montclair State University in New Jersey (1993-2000). While at Montclair, she compiled an overall record of 114-69 (.623), which included three Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships (1994, 1997, 1999), one New Jersey Athletic Conference title (1995) and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1995.

At the NCAA Division III Tournament in 1995, Bradley’s squad advanced to the round of 32, defeating Elizabethtown in first round play. Before joining the Red Hawks, Bradley spent five years at East Orange High School in New Jersey as a coach and teacher (1988-1993) and was an assistant coach at her alma mater, Seton Hall University, for two seasons from 1985-87.

Bradley graduated from Seton Hall University in 1984, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in secondary education with a specialization in mathematics. While at Seton Hall, Bradley was a four-year letterwinner for the Pirates in basketball and was named First Team All-Big East Conference and New Jersey Player of the Year in 1984. Bradley still ranks in the top of many career statistical categories for the Pirates, including first in field goal percentage (474-for-829, .572), second in blocks (189), third in rebounds (964), 11th in steals (166) and 13th in scoring (1,165 pts.).

After her playing days at Seton Hall, Bradley was selected in the seventh round of the American Basketball League draft by the Atlanta Comets. Bradley went on to lead the team in rebounds and blocked shots in her only season as a professional.

Along with her bachelor’s degree, Bradley also received her master’s degree in administration/supervision-teacher training from Montclair State in May of 2000. Bradley is a native of Jersey City, New Jersey, where she received her high school diploma from the Academy of St. Aloysius.

Bo Bivens
Wayne State Assistant Coach

Assistant coach Bo Bivens has joined the Wayne State women’s basketball staff for the 2001-02 campaign, bringing a wide and extensive range of coaching experience to the table that stretches from Louisiana to Texas and back to his hometown of Detroit.

Bivens comes from Detroit Northwestern High School, where he served as head coach for the girls varsity program this past season, which ended in November. Prior to Detroit Northwestern, Bivens was an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team at his alma mater, Grambling State, for the 1999-2000 campaign.

“I’m pleased to have an assistant coach with the experience coach Bivens has,” said head coach Gloria Bradley. “He works very well with student-athletes and his hard work ethic and knowledge of the game of basketball will be extremely beneficial to our team this season.”

Before Grambling State, Bivens was a women’s assistant coach at Detroit Mercy, for one season (1998-99) and was a graduate assistant for Grambling State from 1993-95. At UDM, Bivens helped the Titans to a 13-15 record (10-4 MCC). While at Grambling State, Bivens helped guide the Lady Tigers to two Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament titles (1994, 2000), one SWAC regular season championship (1995) and three NCAA Tournament appearances (1994, 1995, 2000).

Bivens also helped produce two All-Americans and many All-SWAC players while at Grambling State. Between his stints at Grambling State, Bivens was a high school boys coach in Copperas Cove, Texas (1997) and Temple, Texas (1996). He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice from Grambling State in 1993 and 1995. Bivens and his wife of six years, Lynara, reside in Dearborn Heights with their three children, Ebony (8), Isaiah (5) and Essence (2).
