Warriors Return Home, Lose To Lakers

DETROIT – The match was decided by a total of nine points, but in the end it was Mercyhurst that defeated the WSU Warriors, 3-0 (31-29, 30-27, 30-26), in GLIAC volleyball action Friday night (Oct. 4) in Wayne State's first match at the Matthaei Complex in three weeks.

Senior middle blockers Allison Jurasek and Jaime Banners each recorded 10 kills apiece, and Wayne State had five more total kills than the Lakers, but big Mercyhurst blocks hurt the Warriors shot at upsetting the second-place Lakers.

Leslie Macko was the game’s high hitter with 12 kills. Kaili Klieman had eight of the Lakers’ 20 block assists.

Both setters, Rebecca Hague (WSU) and Kari Clapham (MC) tallied 35 assists on the night.

Game one was a back and forth seesaw battle with MC winning 31-29. The Warriors came out of the gate in the second set and took a 12-4 lead. They led 25-20 when Mercyhurst went on a run to take a 28-26 lead and continued on to the 30-27 win. MC’s momentum continued into game three, taking a 7-1 lead, but Wayne State stormed back to close within three at 29-26. But with just one Laker serve, the match was over.

For the Warriors it is their fourth-straight loss to a conference foe as they drop to 10-5 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC. The team will try to bounce back Saturday, Oct. 5 as it hosts Gannon at 4 p.m. MC improves to 14-3, 6-1 to remain in hunt for the South Division title.
