Warriors Drop Second After opening its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) slate last Wednesday, Sept. 19 with a sweep over Hillsdale (30-22, 31-29, 30-18), Wayne State has lost two straight conference matches to Findlay and Ashland this past weekend. Friday evening at the Matthaei Building the Warriors lost to Findlay 3-0 (22-30, 17-30, 23-30), and against Ashland Saturday afternoon WSU lost 3-1 (18-30, 30-21, 24-30, 27-30). The 1-2 record against the GLIAC South Division opponents is Waynes conference record, and overall the Warriors are now 5-8. The Hillsdale match was a makeup from one scheduled for Sept. 11, the day the terrorist attacks occurred in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. It, along with two other home matches the following weekend, were postponed. Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Salisbury (Bedford, MI/Bedford Senior) led the Warriors with 13 kills against Hillsdale, and senior middle hitter Anavia McClure (Detroit, MI/Detroit Henry Ford) added 12. The two switched for the Ashland match, with McClure recording 16 kills and Salisbury making 13. Wayne State struggled against Findlay, finishing with a negative team attack percentage at .023. The Warriors had 22 kills but 24 errors on 87 total attempts. Wayne State travels to Erie, Penn., this coming weekend to face two more GLIAC South squads. Mercyhurst hosts the Warriors on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. EDT, and then WSU stops at Gannon on Saturday, Sept. 29 for a 1 p.m. EDT match. |
