WSU Sweeps Northwood; Warriors Earn
No. 1 Seed in GLIAC vs. GLVC Showdown

Detroit, Mich. – The Wayne State softball team (23-13 overall, 10-2 GLIAC) swept a non-conference doubleheader from Northwood on Wednesday (April 17) at the WSU Softball Field. WSU defeated the Timberwolves in game one, 5-2, and posted seven runs in the first inning of game two en route to a 7-2 victory. The Warriors have won six straight games and 11 of their last 12.

In game one, NU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, however, WSU would respond with four runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Tiffany Korzetz (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) highlighted play in the second inning with a two RBI double that scored sophomores Johanna Proulx (Brampton, Ontario) and Maria D’Agostino (Wixom/Walled Lake Western). Korzetz would later score the fourth run in the inning off an error by the second baseman. Wayne State would add an insurance run in the fourth as senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing) hit her first sacrifice fly of the season which scored Proulx.

Proulx went two-for-three with one RBI and two runs scored, while Korzetz went 1 for 2 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior Amy Thiede (Riverview) earned the victory, allowing two runs off five hits in five innings. Junior Connie Milroth (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs and no hits in her first save.

The first inning in game two was all WSU needed as the Warriors scored seven runs off seven hits. Kashmerick led off the game with single to center and was sacrificed to second by junior Betsy Kirk (Etobicoke, Ontario). The Warriors would then reel off six hits and a walk in their next seven at bats. Following a single by sophomore Beth Berry (Blissfield), sophomore Leah Ondrovick (Tecumseh) hit an RBI double that scored Kashmerick. D’Agostino walked, which was followed by an RBI single by sophomore Lindsay Sammut (New Baltimore/Lakeview) that scored Berry. Proulx singled down the right field line that scored Ondrovick. Freshman Sara LeBlanc (LaSalle, Ontario) followed with a two RBI single that scored D’Agostino and Sammut. Freshman Jenna McWilliams (Tecumseh) bunt singled and Kashmerick would round out the offense with an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Proulx. LeBlanc would score the seventh run of the inning on a passed ball. Northwood scored two runs in the second, but it would not be enough.

Kashmerick, Kirk, Ondrovick and LeBlanc all had two hits. Freshman Lisa Gauthier (Burton/Kearsely) returned to the mound after suffering an injury two weeks ago. She allowed two runs off eight hits in five innings to pick up her sixth win of the year (6-3). Milroth once again came in for relief, allowing no runs and no hits in two innings.

Since the Warriors are in first place in the GLIAC, they will earn the No. 1 seed in this weekend’s GLIAC vs. GLVC Showdown in South Bend, Ind. The Warriors will face the top three seeds in the GLVC (SIU-Edwardsville, Northern Kentucky, Lewis), along with the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds (Quincy, Indianapolis). Play will begin on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Belleville Softball Complex.
