Wayne State Falls at NCAA Regionals The Wayne State softball team was eliminated from play at the NCAA Regionals on Thursday (May 9) after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The Warriors fell to West Virginia Wesleyan, 4-3 (9 innings), earlier in the day. WSU ends the season with 31-19 overall record. In the loss to host-SIUE, it came down to a pitchers dual as WSU freshman Lisa Gauthier (Burton/Kearsely) battled SIUE's RyAnn Spann. Gauthier would allow just one unearned run off four hits in a stellar performance against the No. 1 ranked team in the region, however, Spann would get the best of Wayne State by allowing just one hit, a single by sophomore Beth Berry (Blissfield). SIUE's lone run came in the fourth inning as Valerie McCoy would score on a WSU error which gave them the 1-0 advantage. Earlier in the day against West Virginia Wesleyan, the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead after three innings. WSU would respond with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. The offense was sparked by back-to-back singles from sophomores Lindsay Sammut (New Baltimore/Lakeview) and Johanna Proulx (Brampton, Ontario) to lead off the inning. Following a sacrifice bunt from junior Tiffany Korzetz (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) and a walk by freshman Jenna McWilliams (Tecumseh), senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing) would hit into a fielder's choice, however, Sammut would score on a bad throw by the third baseman. Junior Betsy Kirk (Etobicoke, Ontario) would add the second run by hitting a sac fly, which scored Proulx from third. Berry would hit an RBI single to end the WSU scoring in the fourth. West Virginia Wesleyan would tie the game with a run in the sixth which would later send the game into extra innings. After a scoreless eighth frame, the Bobcats would get the winning run in the ninth. With a runner at second Jessica White would hit a pop fly to centerfield. The Warriors would let the ball drop between them which allowed West Virginia Wesleyan's runner to score from second and secure the victory. Kashmerick, Berry Earn All Region Honors |
