WSU's Berry Hits Two Home Runs As
Warriors Sweep Lake Superior State

Beth BerryDetroit, Mich. – Sophomore Beth Berry (Blissfield) put on a record-setting performance for the Wayne State softball team on Friday (April 26) as the Warrior first baseman went 7 for 8 with two home runs and 10 RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Lake Superior (11-1, 10-2) at the WSU Softball Field.

Berry batted 4 for 4 in game one with two homers and seven runs batted in, and followed with a 3 for 4 performance in game two with three RBI. Her second home run in game one was a walk-off homer, which gave WSU an 11-1 mercy rule victory. The Warriors also mercied the Lakers in game two, 10-2, after five innings. WSU, who has won four straight games, improves to 28-15 overall and a league-leading 12-2 in the GLIAC.

In game one, the Warriors scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings and posted three more runs in the third to take a 7-0 lead. WSU would add a run in the fourth, before LSSU recorded a run in the top of the fifth inning. With an 8-1 lead, Berry ripped a homer to left field, which immediately ended the game. WSU posted 13 total hits in the contest.

Following Berry’s 4 for 4 performance was senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing), who went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI. Berry is now batting .417 for the season with a team-high six homers and 33 RBI, while Kashmerick is batting .411 with a team-leading 62 hits and 15 doubles. Berry’s seven RBI in a game sets a new school record.

Junior Connie Milroth (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) pitched a three-hitter, allowing just one unearned run, while striking out three for her 13th win (13-5). Milroth has won five straight games, dating back to April 10.

The offense kept rolling in game two as the Warriors scored five runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. Freshman Jenna McWilliams (Tecumseh) would hit an RBI single in the second and Kashmerick would smoke an RBI double to center field that added another run. Berry would top off the inning by hitting an RBI double down the left field line that scored junior Betsy Kirk (Etobicoke, Ontario) and Kashmerick. Wayne State would score three more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth for the win. Freshman Lisa Gauthier (Burton/Kearsely) relieved starter Amy Thiede and pitched two and one-thid innings, allowing just three hits in her seventh win of the season (7-4).

With two victories at Northwood on Sunday (April 28) in Midland, the Warriors will be guarenteed the GLIAC regular season title and will earn a No. 1 seed in the GLIAC Tournament, which will be held on May 3-4 in Ashland, Ohio. The Warriors are now batting .301 as a team, compared to .247 for their opponents.
