Warriors Top Lewis At
GLIAC/GLVC Showdown, 2-1

The Wayne State softball team (24-13 overall) opened up play at the GLIAC vs. GLVC Showdown with a 2-1 victory over Lewis on Friday (April 19) in eight innings. WSU was scheduled to play No. 4 ranked Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Friday evening, however, the game was cancelled due to heavy rain in the South Bend (Ind.) area.

Against Lewis, sophomore Maria D'Agostino (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) hit her first home run of the season to give WSU its first run of the game. In the eighth inning, the international tie-break rule was used which puts a runner at second base to start each team's half-inning. Freshman Sara LeBlanc (LaSalle, Ontario) pinch-ran for sophomore Leah Ondrovick (Tecumseh) at second base to start the inning. LeBlanc was sacrificed over to third base and would later score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Lindsay Sammut (New Baltimore/Lakeview) to give WSU the 2-1 victory.

Along with D'Agostino's homer, senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing) and junior Betsy Kirk (Etobicoke, Ontario) each went 2 for 4. Junior Connie Milroth (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) went the distance for her 11th victory of the season (11-5), giving up just one earned run off eight hits.

With weather permitting, the Warriors are scheduled to play Northern Kentucky at noon and Quincy at 8 p.m. on Saturday (April 20).
