Warriors Fall At GLIAC Tournament

The Wayne State softball team was eliminated from play at the GLIAC Tournament in Ashland, Ohio on Friday (May 3), falling to Gannon and Ferris State in the double elimination event. The Warriors, who end the season with a 31-17 record, will wait to see if they earn a spot in the NCAA Regionals, which will be released on Monday (May 6).

WSU opened up play at the conference tournament with a 7-3 victory over Saginaw Valley State. However, the Warriors would be shutout the next two games, dropping a 5-0 decision to Gannon and a 2-0 game to Ferris State in the late evening.

Versus SVSU, the Warriors took a 7-0 lead after two innings with sophomore Leah Ondrovick (Tecumseh) hitting a two-run homer in the first. Sophomore Maria D'Agostino (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) also added a two-run homer in the second. Junior Connie Milroth (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) went the distance for WSU, allowing three runs off 11 hits. Sophomore Beth Berry (Blissfield) also had three singles in the win.

With the victory over SVSU, WSU advanced to face Gannon in the next round. The Knights struck early by scoring five runs in the first two innings, including a four spot in the first off starter Amy Thiede. The Warriors only recorded two hits the entire game off Gannon pitcher Heather Ford, who struck out 10 Wayne State batters. Freshman Lisa Gauthier (Burton/Kearsely) relieved Thiede and pitched 6 2/3 solid innings, giving up just one run.

The loss sent WSU to the second tier bracket where they were eliminated by Ferris State, 2-0. Senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing) went 3 for 4 in perhaps her final game in a Warrior uniform. In the FSU game, Kashmerick hit her 18th double of the season, which breaks the single-season record of 17, which she tied last year. Kashmerick goes into the record books as WSU's career-leader in hits, total bases and doubles.
