Detroit, Mich. — Wayne State senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing) and sophomore Beth Berry (Blissfield) were both honored by being named softball All-Americans, which was announced on Thursday, May 16. Kashmerick was named a first team pick, while Berry was a third team at-large selection.

Kashmerick is now a two-time All-American after earning first team honors following her junior season in 2001. As a senior, Kelly batted .392 and led the GLIAC in hits (69), runs (42), doubles (18) and total bases (99). Kashmerick finished her career as WSU’s all-time leader in games played (231) and at-bats (769). She ranks second in career hits (281), doubles (54) and total bases (377), and third in career runs scored (135). Kashmerick also holds single-season records for games played (63), at-bats (203), doubles (18) and total bases (118). In addition, Kashmerick was a three-time All-GLIAC and two-time first team All-Region honoree.

Berry, a first time All-America selection, led the league in batting average (.422), home runs (7), RBI (38), on-base percentage (.464) and slugging percentage (.630) in 2002. She was a first team All-GLIAC and All-Region pick at first base and also earned a spot on the NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team. Earlier in the year, Berry went 7 for 8 with two home runs and 10 RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Lake Superior State (April 26), which earned her GLIAC Player of the Week honors.

Wayne State, who finished with a 31-19 record, won the GLIAC regular season championship and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1996.
