Wayne State Splits
Doubleheader with Gannon

Detroit, Mich. – The Wayne State softball team split a doubleheader with No. 20 ranked Gannon on Saturday, March 30 at the WSU Softball Field. The Warriors dropped a 3-0 decision in game one and defeated the Knights, 2-1, in game two. WSU now stand at 13-12 overall, 2-1 in the GLIAC. Gannon is 13-1-1 overall, 1-1 in the GLIAC.

Playing in extremely high winds, the Warriors were shutout in game one 3-0. Both teams were shut down 0-0 until the fifth inning, when Gannon scored two runs off two hits and a WSU error. The Knights would add an insurance run in the seventh to complete the 3-0 shutout. The Warriors recorded just four hits with sophomore Maria D’Agostino (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) posting two singles. Freshman Lisa Gauthier (Burton/Kearsely) took the loss, giving up three runs off seven hits.

In game two, it proved to be a pitchers dual as both teams were held scoreless until the seventh and final inning. In the seventh, Gauthier, hit a two-out double to left center. Sophomore Lindsay Sammut (New Baltimore/Lakeview) would follow with a pinch-hit single that sent Gauthier home. On the play, Gannon catcher Meredith Sherman bobbled the ball, allowing Gauthier to score. With Sammut on second, freshman Jenna McWilliams (Tecumseh) hit her first double of the season to score Sammut and give WSU a 2-0 lead. Three straight singles by the Knights in the bottom of the seventh cut the WSU lead to 2-1, however, GU’s Lindsay Scholl grounded out to second with runners at first and third to give Wayne State a series split. In the win, junior Connie Milroth (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) went seven full innings, allowing just five hits.

The win is WSU’s fourth over a Top 25 opponent this season. The Warriors will travel to Saginaw Valley on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
