Warriors Wins Sixth Straight At Ferris State

The Wayne State softball team is currently riding a six-game winning streak after sweeping a doubleheader at Ferris State on Saturday (April 6) in Big Rapids. The Warriors won game one, 5-3, and took game two by a 6-2 score. WSU is now 17-12 overall, 6-1 in the GLIAC.

The Warriors took a 3-0 lead in game one off an RBI double by sophomore Johanna Proulx (Brampton, Ontario) and an RBI single by freshman Jenna McWilliams (Tecumseh) and a key Ferris State error by the shortstop. FSU would respond with three runs in the sixth inning, however, sophomore Leah Ondrovick (Tecumseh) would hit an RBI single and score on a wild pitch in the seventh to give WSU a decisive 5-3 win.

Ondrovick went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing) batted 3 for 4. Junior Connie Milroth (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) got her eighth win (8-4), allowing two earned runs, while striking out three.

In game two, sophomore Lindsay Sammut (New Baltimore/Lakeview) hit an RBI single in the first two give WSU a 1-0 lead. The Warriors would later score four runs in the fourth inning, which was highlighted by Proulx's second triple of the season, which scored Sammut. Junior Tiffany Korzetz (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) also hit an RBI single in the fourth that scored Proulx. The Warriors would add an insurance run in the fifth and go on to win 6-2.

Korzetz and Proulx each went 2 for 3, while Kashmerick and Sammut each went 3 for 4. Junior Amy Thiede (Riverview) picked up her second straight victory, allowing just two runs off eight hits, while striking out seven.

WSU faces Grand Valley on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Grand Rapids.
