Kashmerick Named First Team All-American

Kelly KashmerickWayne State University junior centerfielder, Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing, Mich.) was named First Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for the 2001 season.

Kashmerick, who batted .404 for the season, was named First Team All-Great Lakes Region and First Team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. She led the conference in hits (82) and runs (43). She was second in the GLIAC in doubles (17) and total bases (118). Kashmerick finished third in the GLIAC in batting average. Kashmerick had 23 multiple games and five multiple RBI games.

Kashmerick is the first All-American since Amanda Jennings, who won the award in 1998.

Wayne State finished the 2001 season with a record of 37-20 overall and 15-5 in the GLIAC.




Berry, Kashmerick Named
Great Lakes All-Region

The Wayne State University softball team had two players receive Great Lakes All-Region honors from the National Federation Coaches Association. Junior outfielder Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing, Mich.) and freshman Beth Berry (Blissfield, Mich.) were both named First Team All-Great Lakes Region.

Kashmerick, who was named First Team All-GLIAC, batted .404 in 2001 with three homers and 25 RBI. Kashmerick led the conference in hits (82) and runs (43). She was second in the GLIAC in doubles (17) and total bases (118). Kashmerick finished third in the GLIAC in batting average. Kashmerick had 23 multiple-hit games and five multiple-RBI games.

Berry, who was named Second Team All-GLIAC, hit .344 on season with six home runs and 33 RBI. Berry had 19 multiple-hit games and 10 multiple-RBI contests. She led the Warriors in RBI, homeruns and putouts. Berry committed only one error on the season in 406 attempts.

Wayne State finished the 2001 season with a record of 37-20 overall and 15-5 in the GLIAC.


Three Warriors Named All-GLIAC

The Wayne State University softball team received three laurels from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this week. Junior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing, Mich.), freshman Beth Berry (Blissfield, Mich.) and junior Jen Daniel (Flint, Mich./Kearsley) were named to the All-GLIAC squads for the 2001 season.

Kashmerick, who was named First Team All-GLIAC, batted .404 for the season with three homers and 25 RBI. She had 23 multiple-hit games and five multiple-RBI games this season. Kashmerick had a hitting streak of 13 games this season. She batted .419 with runners on base and .426 with runners in scoring position. This is the second consecutive season Kashmerick was named All-GLAIC. Last season she was a Second Team All-GLIAC selection.

Berry, who was a Second Team All-GLIAC selection, hit .344 on the season with six home runs and 33 RBI. Berry had 19 multiple-hit games and 10 multiple-RBI contests. She led the Warriors in RBI, home runs and putouts. Berry committed only one error on the season in 406 attempts. Berry was named GLIAC Player of the Week for the week of April 16. She hit .414 with runners on base and .390 with runners in scoring position. Berry’s longest hitting streak of the season was 13 games.

Daniel, who named Second Team All-GLIAC, improved her batting average 179 points from last season to .327. Daniel had 15 multiple-hit games and four multiple-RBI games. Daniel’s longest hitting streak of the season was eight games.

Wayne State also had two players named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention in sophomore Betsy Kirk (Etobicoke, Ont./Martingrove) and sophomore pitcher Connie Milroth (St. Clair Shores, Mich.).

Wayne State finished the 2001 season with a record of 37-20 overall and 15-5 in the GLIAC. WSU finished second in the GLIAC Tournament behind Grand Valley State. This is the 14th time the Warriors have won 30 or more games under head coach Gary Bryce.


Daniel Named GLIAC Player of the Week

GLIAC ChampionshipWayne State University junior shortstop Jen Daniel (Flint, Mich./Kearsley) was named GLIAC Softball Player of the Week for the week of May 7.

Daniel batted .550 last week (11-for-20) with one home run and nine RBI. Daniel posted a slugging percentage of .750 with an on-base percentage of .600. She hit her first home run of the season against Hillsdale. Daniel batted .500 (7-for-14) with five RBI in the GLIAC Tournament.

Daniel was a second team All-GLIAC selection this season. She improved her batting average 146 points from last season to .327.

Wayne State University finished the 2001 season with a record of 37-20 and a GLIAC record of 15-5. WSU finished second in the GLIAC behind Grand Valley State.
