Warriors Earn Regional Ranking The Wayne State University men's tennis team is ranked sixth in the latest Great Lakes Region rankings released on Feb. 27. The Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings are administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The first national rankings will be released on March 1. The Great Lakes region consists of schools in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and West Virginia Intercollegiate Conference (WVIC). The GLIAC is well represented with Northwood rated No. 1. They are followed by Ferris State, Indianapolis, Southern Indiana, West Virginia Wesleyan and WAYNE STATE. Following the Warriors are Shepherd College, Charleston, Missouri-St. Louis and Grand Valley State. WSU will face Missouri-St. Louis on March 1.
Junior Rohan Singh (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) lost a tough three-set match at No. 1 singles, while the Warriors won the other five singles matches and all three doubles matches. Victories for WSU were recorded by senior Mikolaj Pontus (Gibraltar, MI/Carlson) at No. 2 singles, junior Hormis Tharakan (Ottawa, ONT/Brookfield) at No. 3 singles, junior Mikolaj Lodzinski (Grosse Pointe Park, MI/Grosse Pointe South) at No. 4 singles, junior Matt Akers (Mt. Clemens, MI/L'Anse Cruese Central) at No. 5 singles and freshman Rob Girvin (Armada, MI/Armada) at No. 6 singles. Winning doubles matches for the Warriors were the No. 1 team of Pontus and Tharakan, the No. 2 team of Singh and Akers, and the No. 3 team of Girvin and Lodzinski. WSU will play in St. Louis, Missouri this weekend.
