WSU Defeats Missouri-St. Louis In a Great Lakes Regional match, the Wayne State University men's tennis squad recorded a 6-3 win at Missouri-St. Louis Friday afternoon (March 1). WSU won four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles flights for the victory. Junior Rohan Singh (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) lost a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles to Matt Vaulkhard. At No. 2 singles, junior Mike Davis (Ferndale, MI/Almont) fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to Martin Kardos. Senior Mikolaj Pontus (Gibraltar, MI/Carlson) recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win over Josef Clark at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Lech Czerwinski (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm) posted a 6-1, 7-5 triumph at No. 4 singles over Martin Damm. Junior Hormis Tharakan (Ottawa, ONT/Brookfield) defeated Mario Gruden 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Eduardo Carvalho (Santos, Brazil/Colegio Cenaculo) won a 6-1, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4 match at No. 6 singles over Ryan Trela. UMS first doubles team of Vaulkhard and Clark upended WSU's duo of Davis and Pontus, 8-6. Singh and Czerwinski won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, over Kardos and Trela. Junior Matt Akers (Mt. Clemens, MI/L'Anse Cruese) teamed with Carvalho to post an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Gruden and T.J. Schaefer. The Warriors will face SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday, March 2.
