WSU Sweeps Lewis In Season-Opener
The Wayne State University mens tennis team began its 2001 season with a convincing 9-0 victory at Lewis on Friday night (Feb. 8).
Coach Rick Cummins' squad won all six singles matches, dropping a total of seven games. The three Warrior doubles teams won 24 of 25 games. Junior Rohan Singh (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) won his first singles match 6-1, 6-1 and combined with sophomore Lech Czerwinski (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm) to win the second doubles match 8-0. Junior Mike Davis (Ferndale, MI/Almont) won his second singles match 6-2, 6-1 and teamed with senior Mikolaj Pontus (Gibraltar, MI/Carlson) to win the first doubles match 8-1. Pontus won his third singles match 6-0, 6-0. Junior Matt Akers (Mt. Clemens, MI/LAnse Cruese Central) won his fourth singles match 6-0, 6-1 and combined with junior Hormis Tharakan (Ottawa, Ontario/Brookfield) to win the third double match 8-0. Sophomore Eduardo Carvalho (Santos, Brazil/Colegio Cenaculo) won his fifth singles match 6-0, 6-0, while junior Mikolaj Lodzinski (Grosse Pointe Park, MI/Grosse Pointe South) won his sixth singles match 6-0, 6-1. Wayne State faces Chicago State and Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 8.
