Warriors Drop GLIAC Opener At FSU The Wayne State men's tennis team dropped it GLIAC opener to No. 18 ranked Ferris State, 7-2, on Friday, March 22 in Big Rapids. The Warriors, who are sixth in the latest NCAA regional rankings, are now 9-6 overall, 0-1 in the league, while FSU improves to 4-4, 2-1 in the GLIAC. In doubles, junior Rohan Singh (Dearborn/Edsel Ford) and sophomore Lech Czerwinski (Birmingham/Seaholm) were WSU's lone winners, defeating Francisco Valencia and Mark Dichiara, 9-8 (1) at No. 2. Junior Mike Davis (Ferndale/Almont) and senior Mikolaj Pontus (Gibraltar/Carlson) fell at the No. 1 doubles spot to Matt Cole and Jason Cole, 8-5, while junior Matt Akers (Mt. Clemens/L'Anse Creuse) and junior Hormis Tharakan (Ottawa, Ont./Brookfield) dropped an 8-6 decision at the No. 3 position to Martin Hoch and Ian Westermann. In singles, WSU picked up a victory at the No. 5 spot, where Tharakan knocked off Dichiara (6-2, 6-1). At No. 6, the match came down to the wire as FSU's Westermann pulled out a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-5 win over sophomore Eduardo Carvalho (Santos, Brazil). Czerwinski also came up short in a three-setter, falling to Jason Cole, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-5, at No. 4. Valencia defeated Singh at No. 1 (6-3, 6-2), Martin Hoch defeated Davis at No. 2 (6-4, 6-2) and Matt Cole defeated Pontus at No. 3 (6-3, 6-2).
