Guerrera Named CHA
Defensive Player of the Week

Wayne State's Dave Guerrera, a 5-11, 180-pound junior netminder from St. Leonard, Quebec, has been named College Hockey America (CHA) Defensive Player of the Week. Guerrera stopped 77-of-82 shots and posted a .939 save percentage last weekend as he earned both victories in a sweep at Alabama-Huntsville. He saved 40-of-41 Charger shots in a 4-1 win Friday (Dec. 28) and tallied 37 saves in a 6-4 victory Saturday (Dec. 29).

Warriors Move Into First Place In CHA

The Wayne State University men's hockey team moved into first place with a 6-4 triumph Saturday night (Dec. 29) at Alabama-Huntsville.

The Warriors, unbeaten in their last five games (3-0-2), are now 5-1-2 in College Hockey America and 7-8-3 overall. The Chargers fall to 10-9-1 overall and 5-6-1 in CHA play.

Junior netminder Dave Guerrera (St. Leonard, QUE) continued his stellar play with 37 saves.

WSU's two junior forwards from Trenton, Michigan, paced the offense with two goals apiece. Jason Durbin scored just 20 seconds into the game, while his second marker came after UAH had cut the Warrior to lead one at 3-2 on two man-advantage goals.

Jack Redwood tallied his first of the night with only 53 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. His second lamp-lighter came on a Wayne State power play and proved to be the game-winning goal.

Freshman Billy Collins (Enderby, British Columbia) netted his fourth of the campaign and sophomore Chris Vail (Grosse Pointe Shores, MI) completed WSU's scoring with his second of the season.

Dusty Kingston (Spencerville, ONT), the left wing with Durbin and Redwood, contributed three assists in the victory. Freshman left wing Nathan Rosychuk (Athabasca, ALB) assisted on two Warrior goals after recording just one assist in his previous 15 games as a collegian.

"We had solid play by all four lines and the three sets of defense tonight," commented WSU head coach Bill Wilkinson.

UAH goalie Adam MacLean made 22 saves in the game. The Warriors converted two of six power-play chances, while the Chargers scored on two of their nine man-advantage opportunities.

Wayne State will look to improve upon its 2-5-2 mark at home when it begins a four-game homestand on Jan. 4-5 against Central Collegiate Hockey Association member Lake Superior. WSU resumes CHA action the following weekend when Air Force travels to Detroit.

Great goaltending and key penalty killing sparked the Warriors to their third consecutive road league win this season. Junior netminder Dave Guerrera (St. Leonard, QUE) made 40 saves including 20 in the opening period.

Wayne State started the scoring 9:13 into the opening period as junior right wing Jon Brink (Portage, MI) netted his second of the campaign off assists from Chris Vail (Grosse Pointe Shores, MI) and Maxim Starchenko (Kharkov, Ukraine).

The Chargers tied the score with five seconds remaining in the first period as Craig Bushey tallied an unassisted goal.

Junior center Jason Durbin (Trenton, MI) scored short-handed at 14:44 of the middle stanza to put WSU in front 2-1. His sixth of the season came while Tyler Kindle was in the penalty box.

WSU, clinging to a one goal lead, had to kill a five-minute major to start the third period. Strong penalty killing efforts were turned in by Steve Nichols, Brent Renfrew, Dusty Kingston and Jason Durbin.

Brink, who scored his second of the contest with 7:16 remaining in the third period, completed his first collegiate hat trick with a power-play goal at 19:11. Kindle and Starchenko garnered assists on both of Brink's third period lamp-lighters.

Wayne State is now 6-0-1 on the year when scoring at least four goals.

The teams conclude the weekend series on Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville with face-off slated for 8:05 p.m. Eastern.
