Colorado Springs, Colo. – The defending CHA (College Hockey America) Champion Wayne State men’s hockey team opened the 2001-02 campaign by defeating Air Force twice over the weekend, improving its record to 3-3 overall, 2-0 in the CHA. The Warriors posted a 7-4 victory over the Falcons on Friday night and followed with a 5-3 victory on Saturday.

On Friday, Wayne and Air Force battled to a 3-3 tie after two periods of play before the Warriors reeled off four goals in the third period to take the 7-4 victory. Junior Dusty Kingston (Spencerville, Ontario) posted a hat-trick, which included a short-handed goal in the second and a power play goal in the third. Kingston recorded a team-high five shots on goal, scoring on three of them. Junior goalie Dave Guerrera (St. Leonard, Quebec) got the win in net, posting 28 saves.

On Saturday, Wayne rolled to a 4-1 lead after two periods en route to the 5-3 win. Kingston scored his fourth goal of the series by finding the net in the second period of game two. Junior Nick Shrader (Blissfield) scored a goal on a team-high seven shots on net. Guerrera compiled 34 saves for his third win of the year. The Warriors took advantage of 15 Air Force penalties by going 4-for-10 on the power play in the series.
