Warriors Advance To Championship Game The Wayne State University mens hockey team moved into Saturday nights College Hockey American championship game with a 3-1 win over Air Force Friday night (March 15) at Dwyer Arena in Niagara, New York. After a scoreless first period which saw the Falcons hold an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal, the Warriors scored first when freshman right wing Nathan Rosychuk (Athabasca, ALB/Grande Prairie Storm) deflected a shot from the blueline past Air Force goalie Mike Polidor at the 8:15 mark. Rosychuks 12th of the campaign was assisted by junior defenseman Tyler Kindle (Portage, MI/Bozeman Icedogs) and junior center Jason Durbin (Trenton, MI/Danville Wings). Rosychuk has now scored a goal in three straight games and has a goal 10 of his last 15 contests. The Falcons tied the game at the 12:50 mark of the middle period when Justin Hamilton banged in a rebound of a shot by Kyle Fransdal. Wayne State held a 9-7 advantage in shots during the second stanza. In the third period, junior left wing Dustin Kingston (Spencerville, ONT/Brockville Braves) snapped an 11-game goalless streak when his third shot on goal in succession rolled across the goalline at the 14:21 mark. Kingstons 12th of the year was assisted by linemates Jon Brink (Portage, MI/West Michigan Warriors) and Durbin. With his helper, Durbin now has 10 multiple-point games this season. Junior right wing Jack Redwood (Trenton, MI/Compuware Ambassadors) sealed the win with a rebound goal after Polidor had stopped junior center Maxim Starchenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/Powell River Kings). Air Force coach Frank Serratore pulled Polidor with 2:31 left but the Falcons could not get the puck past Warrior goaltender David Guerrera (St. Leonard, QUE/Estevan Bruins). Guerrera finished the game with 25 saves including 11 in the third period. Polidor turned aside 29 Wayne State shots. The Warriors scored one power-play goal in two opportunities, while stopping all three Falcon man-advantage opportunities. WSU has allowed only two power-play goals in the last four games (19 chances). Wayne State (20-11-4) will face Alabama-Huntsville at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in the 2002 CHA Championship game. Last year, the Warriors upended the Chargers 4-1 in Huntsville to claim the 2001 CHA Tournament title.
