Maestro Jerzy Radz begins his 10th season as head coach of Wayne State University’s men’s and women’s fencing programs. Before coming to WSU, Radz was the head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s men’s and women’s fencing teams for one season where they won the Big Ten Conference Championships. During his time at Wayne State, Radz has seen WSU’s programs increase in quality and competition. In fact, during the past few years, WSU has added the women’s Epee and Sabre and has provided an venue for the two teams to practice against each other.

Throughout Radz’s tenure he has coached 35 All-Americans, including current team members Marta Sciubisz and Jakub Krochmalski, (who placed second at last year’s NCAA’s) and two NCAA Champions (Harald Bauder-1991; Thorsten Becker- 1996).

Being no stranger to the sport himself, Radz fenced in Poland before coming to the United States and is listed as a Fencing Master (the highest level in fencing). In addition, Radz was a member of Poland’s Olympic Coaching Staff from 1979 to 1988 where he coached olympians Janusz Olech, who won the silver medal at the Seould olympic games in 1988, and Mark Gniewkowski in the Seoul and Barcelona games. Olech was also on the Polish National Team which finished fifth in 1988. Radz is also a certified United State Fencing Association referee.

Radz is single and has one son, Woytek. Radz resides in Royal Oak, Michigan.
