Fencing Alum Wins National Title

Charles J. Schneider, a four-year letterwinner (1970-74) on the Wayne State University Fencing team and a 1977 graduate of WSU's Law School, won first place at the 2002 Summer National Championships sponsored by U.S. Fencing.

Schneider won the title in the Veteran 40/49 men's epée event in competition held June 30 in Greenville, South Carolina.

Schneider served as team captain during the 1973-74 season and earned the outstanding fencer award for WSU for the 1970-71 season.

Wayne State Tied For 12th
At NCAA Championships

Wayne State University finished tied for 12th (with Northwestern University) among all Division I and II schools competing in fencing and first among Division II institutions with a combined (men's and women's) 56 points.

Jakub KrochmalskiPenn State won the combined team title with 195 points.

The men's finals were contested on Sunday, March 24. In the men's sabre, senior Jakub Krochmalski (Lodz, Poland) upset the second seed, Alex Weber (Penn State), 15-10 in the semifinals before falling to Ivan Lee (St. John's), 15-9, in the championship match.

In the men's epée, freshman Wojciech Dudek (Krakow, Poland) finished 17th.
