Two Warriors To Compete Two Wayne State fencers have been selected among 144 participants to compete in the NCAA Championships on March 21-24 at the Drew University Simon Forum and Athletic Center in Madison, New Jersey. Senior Jakub Krochmalski (Lodz, Poland) will compete in the sabre, while freshman Wojciech Dudek (Krakow, Poland) will participate in the epee. Fencers will compete in a round-robin of 24 fencers in five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top four fencers in each event will fence direct elimination 15-touch bouts for first, second, third and fourth place. Absolute ties for the seeding will be broken as follows: for positions one through three, by a coin toss; for position four, by a fence-off. An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships. Krochmalski Finishes Second The Wayne State University men's fencing team participated in the 2002 Midwest Regional Championships on March 9 at Case Western Reserve University. Senior Jakub Krochmalski (Lodz, Poland) finished second in the sabre competition. Also participating in the sabre were sophomore Marc Mathias (Mishawaka, IN) and senior Jonathan Ferris (Southfield, MI). Mathias placed eighth, while Ferris finished ninth. Freshman Wojciech Dudek (Krakow, Poland) was WSU's top finisher in the epée placing fifth. Junior Jason Murdoch (Waterford, MI) placed ninth. In the men's foil competition, senior Ian Chapp (Detroit, MI) was eighth, while senior Rex Briones (Livonia, MI) was ninth. Senior Jason Jopek (Westland, MI) placed 11th. The NCAA selections will take place on March 14. The championships will be March 21-24 at Drew University in Madison, N.J. |
