WSU Hosts GLIAC Championships; MILFORD, Mich. The WSU womens cross country team recorded its highest conference finish ever the 2002 GLIAC Championships Saturday, Oct. 26. The women placed third overall while the mens squad finished in a respectful fourth place at Kensington Metropark. Grand Valley made it a clean sweep, winning the womens race with 29 points and the mens with 42. Ashlands Nick Cordes earned individual honors with a time of 24:15.8 while Shannon Antvelink from GVSU had the fastest womens time of 21:59.5. Warrior Senior Shelly Vickery (Berkley, Mich.) ran in a second-place time of 22:01.7. Junior Amy Averill (Detroit, Mich./Southfield Christian) joined Vickery in the top 10 with a time of 22:37.3 for eighth place. Vickery was selected to the first team all-GLIAC while Averill was second team. The mens team was led by Brian Goodwin with a time of 25:28.1 (sixth place) and Mike Buslepp (25:40.2, 13th place) and Ed Garza (26:03.7, 24th place). Goodwins placing was good enough for first team all-league Wayne State now preps for the Great Lakes Regional in Grand Rapids on Nov. 9.
