Detroit, Mich. – David Greer has been appointed the 10th head men's basketball coach at Wayne State University, as announced by WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. Greer, the current associate head men's basketball coach at the University of Detroit Mercy, will begin his position immediately. Greer replaces Ron Hammye, who resigned September 18 to become an athletic administrator at Livonia (Mich.) Franklin High School.

"I am extremely pleased that David has joined our department as our head coach for men's basketball. He brings a wealth of experience in recruiting, handling issues of student welfare and a familiarity with metropolitan Detroit," Fournier said. "His winning approach has been evident in a number of strong athletic programs and his personal style will be a benefit as we move our program to Division I."

Greer has spent the last six seasons at Detroit Mercy, the last three as the Titans associate head men's basketball coach. First as assistant coach and then after his promotion to associate in 1998, he coordinated the Titans' recruiting, with focus on Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and junior colleges. He also handled coaching and practice planning for offenses and defenses, and scheduled the Titans' games.

This is Greer's second appointment as a head coach on the collegiate level. In 1986-87 Greer was head coach of Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio. He led the Dragons to a 17-12 overall record that season. In 1987 Greer moved to Youngstown State University as assistant coach for two seasons, then he was an assistant coach at Ohio University from 1989-93. His last stop before joining the Detroit Mercy staff was serving as assistant coach at the University of Akron in 1994-95.

While Greer was at UDM, the Titans compiled a 38-1 record at Calihan Hall the past three seasons. In that span, UDM has won at least 20 games in each of the last three years, including 25 victories in 2000-2001 and 1998-99. Last season the Titans finished 25-12 overall.

Greer was a four-time letterwinner at Bowling Green State University, and he is the second former Falcon to coach the Warriors. Hammye lettered at BGSU from 1974-78. Greer is the all-time career assist record holder at Bowling Green State and the Mid-American Conference (MAC), and he was named First Team All-MAC in 1983. The Falcons won the MAC two titles with Greer, in 1981 and 1983. Greer captained the Falcons during the 1982-83 season. He holds a bachelor of science in education from Bowling Green State.

Greer and his wife, Bertie, reside in Farmington Hills, Mich., with their three children, Joshua (13), Courtney (11) and David Anthony (5).
