Three Warriors Named All-GLIAC

The Wayne State University men’s basketball team received three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season awards for the 2000-2001 season.

Mike BrownSophomore forward Brandon Gray (River Rouge, Mich.) was named GLIAC South Division All-Defensive Team. Gray was eighth on the team in steals (9) and tied for second in blocks (7).

Junior guard Mike Brown (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) was named GLIAC South Division All-Conference Second Team. Brown led the Warriors in scoring (13.4 ppg), assists (93), steals (47), three-point field goals made (59) and total rebounds (124).

Reggie KirklandJunior guard/forward Reggie Kirkland (Detroit, Mich./Romulus) was named GLIAC South Division All-Conference Second Team. Kirkland was third on the team in scoring (11.5 ppg) and third in rebounding (4.6 ppg). Kirkland led the Warriors in scoring five times this season.

Wayne State finished with a record of 12-14 overall this season. The Warriors were 9-4 at home this season and have a record of 35-6 the past three seasons at the Matthaei Building.




The Wayne State University men’s basketball team wrapped up the 2000-2001 in Erie, Pa. The Warriors fell to Mercyhurst, 62-60 (Feb. 22) and lost to Gannon, 89-77 (Feb. 24). The Warriors finished with a record of 12-14 overall and 6-11 in the GLIAC. Wayne State finished with a home record of 9-4 overall. WSU is 35-6 the past three seasons at the Matthaei Building. This is the first losing season for the Warriors since the 1990-1991 season. Below are WSU’s top performers.

Andy Dold (Detroit, Mich./Harper Woods Notre Dame) – A junior guard, Dold finished the season averaging 2.2 ppg and 1.0 rpg off the bench. He scored a season-high 12 points and dished out two assists against Saginaw Valley State University (Jan. 18). Dold played in 23 games for the Warriors while starting four contests.

Reggie Kirkland (Detroit, Mich./Romulus) – The junior guard/forward averaged 11.5 ppg and 4.6 rpg Kirkland scored in double figures in 15 contests this season. He scored in double-digits in the last nine games of the season. Kirkland recorded one double-double on the season. He scored a season-high 25 points against Gannon University (Feb. 3). Kirkland led the Warriors in free throw percentage (.821) and field goal percentage (.544). Kirkland hit 42 of his last 44 free throws. Kirkland set a WSU single-season record with 31-consecutive made free throws. Terry Cuples, who connected on 22 consecutive free throws, set the previous record in 1967-1968.

Kendall LeSure (Detroit, Mich./Pershing) – A sophomore guard averaged 7.1 ppg and 2.7 rpg, LeSure scored in double figures seven time this season including a season-high performance of 23 points against Michigan Tech University (Jan. 4). LeSure was second on the team in steals and fourth in assists (35).

Ron Kochan (Taylor, Mich.) – A sophomore guard, Kochan caught on late with the Warriors playing in three games. He scored three points and dished out two assists against Ashland (Jan. 27).

Justin Gorman (Riverview, Mich./Aquinas) – The sophomore guard averaged 7.4 ppg and 2.8 rpg off the bench. Gorman scored in double figures eight times this season. He scored a season-high 18 points against Madonna (Dec. 13). Gorman was second on the team in three-point field goals made (43).

Brandon Gray (River Rouge, Mich.) - A sophomore forward averaged 7.7 ppg and 4.5 rpg, Gray scored in double figures in eight games for the Warriors including a season-high 24 points against Northern Michigan (Jan. 6). He led the Warriors in scoring twice and led in rebounding seven times.

Rick Fox (Toledo, OH/St. Francis) – A junior center, Fox led the Warriors in rebounding despite missing six games this season due to mononucleosis. Fox reached double figures in scoring 12 times this season. He led the Warriors in scoring five times and in rebounding in six times. Fox had two double-doubles on the season, which included 30-point and 13-rebound performance against Madonna (Dec. 13). Fox was second on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and second in field goal percentage (.486).

Nick Gout (Allen Park, Mich.) – The freshman forward averaged 9.8 ppg and 4.6 rpg. Gout scored in double figures 14 times this season including a 32-point performance against Saginaw Valley State (Nov. 18). Gout had two double-doubles on the season including 11 points and 11 rebounds in the final game of the season against Gannon (Feb. 24). Gout led the Warriors in scoring six times and was the leading rebounder in six contests.

Chukemeka Okonkwo (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) – A senior forward averaged 6.4 ppg and 4.4 rpg, Okonkwo had seven contests in which he reached double figures in scoring. He scored in double figures in his last three contests. Okonkwo had one double-double on the season against Rochester College (Dec. 5) when he posted 11 points and 11 rebounds. He led the Warriors in scoring once and led in rebounding four times.

Mike Brown (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) – A junior guard, Brown led the Warriors in points (13.4 ppg), assists (93), steals (47), total rebounds (124), defensive rebounds (94), minutes (35.8) and three-point field goals made (59). Brown scored in double figures 17 times and scored 20 or more points in a contest five different times. Brown scored a season-high 28 points against SIU-Edwardsville (Nov. 22). Brown led the Warriors in scoring six times and was the leading rebounder six times.
