WSU Hall of Fame

The Athletic Hall of Fame

Wayne State University’s Athletic Hall of Fame is located in the Southwest Foyer of the Matthaei Building. The current Board of Directors was appointed by Vice President for Academic Affairs Tilden G. Edelstein, and charged with selecting the inductees. Up to six additional members may be selected annually. Criteria for selection include:

  • Nominees become eligible 10 years after graduation or withdrawal from WSU.
  • Nominees must have received two awards in one sport or one award in each of two sports or more.
  • Staff-faculty members become eligible after separation from WSU, unless being considered for athletic achievement.
  • Evidence of outstanding career as an athlete or staff-faculty member must be presented.
  • Consideration may be given to the professional or amateur athletic career of the nominee.
  • A unanimous vote in the nominee’s favor must be cast by the Board of Directors.

Athletic Hall of Fame Honor Award

A new award was begun by the Athletic Hall of Fame Directors in 1994. The Athletic Hall of Fame Honor Award was adopted to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves in assisting Wayne State Warrior Athletics.

The Board can bestow the award to only one individual at each Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, and is under no obligation to bestow the award in a given year.

The first recipient of the Athletic Hall of Fame Honor Award was David C. Farris in 1994. Farris is a former WSU head football coach.

The second, and last recipient so far, for the Athletic Hall of Fame Award was Lambros Milonas, who was honored posthumously at the 1996 induction ceremony. Milonas was the first and still only historian for the Wayne State University Athletic Hall of Fame since its inception in 1976.
