Wayne State Football Takes
Beating From Grand Valley State

Allendale, Mich. – The Wayne State football team was routed by Grand Valley State on Saturday at Lubbers Field, falling to the Lakers 77-12. The Warriors, who have lost three games in a row, fall to 3-6 overall, 3-5 in the GLIAC.

The 77 points allowed by WSU on Saturday ties them for second all-time in points allowed in Wayne State school history. Wayne allowed 77 points to Wittenberg in 1961 and gave up 88 points to Western Michigan in 1918. The Warriors also gave up 73 points to Saginaw Valley in 1997.

In the game, GVSU dominated the contest from the get-go taking an early 49-0 lead at the half and a 63-0 lead in the third quarter before Wayne scored on a two-yard pass from Randy Hutchison (Tecumseh) to sophomore wideout Sterling Walker (Detroit/Redford) to cut the deficit to 63-6 with 17 seconds left in the third. Wayne’s only other touchdown came from senior Pierre Brown (W. Bloomfield), who hauled in a 42-yard pass from Hutchison in the fourth quarter.

Wayne State’s biggest highlight came from Brown, who hauled in 11 catches for 166 yards and the lone TD, while Walker posted six catches for 92 yards and the other TD. Hutchison finished the night with 122 yards on 6-of-12 passing with two TD’s. Sophomore Dan Gray (Belle River, Ontario) took a majority of the snaps for the Warriors, throwing for 151 yards on 14-of-32 passing. Sophomore Jorge Gomez (Oxford) led the Warriors in rushing with 79 yards on 14 carries, which included a 53 yard scamper.

On the defensive side of the ball, Wayne was led by junior Terrance Towns (Detroit/Cass Tech), who posted 10 tackles with two for a loss.

During the game, GVSU set the GLIAC single-season scoring record with 461 points and also tied the GLIAC record with 11 touchdown’s in one game.

The Warriors will conlude the 2001 season by hosting Northwood on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Wayne State Stadium in a Noon kickoff.
