The university has come a long way since its start as the Detroit Medical College in 1868. The College of Education came next (1881) followed by the College of Liberal Arts (1917), the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions (1924), the Law School (1927), the Graduate School (1933), the College of Engineering (1933), the School ofSocial Work (1935), the College of Nursing (1945), the School of Business Administration (1946), the College of Lifelong Learning (1973), the College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs (1985) and the College of Fine, Performing & Communication Arts (1986). The addition of the College of Science in 1993 brings the total number of schools and colleges to 14.

Today, nearly 31,000 students attend WSU. Among its biggest attractions are its large course and program offerings. The university offers more than 5,500 courses in 359 major subject areas with 128 bachelor's, 137 master's, 62 doctoral, and 32 certificate, specialist and professional programs. It is no wonder WSU has one of the largest graduate enrollments in the country. Besides the quality of its programs, another draw to Wayne State is its six satellite centers throughout the metropolitan area. Two of the largest sites are the Oakland Center in Farmington Hills and the University Center at Macomb Community College.
